Lynn
Crawford Cook is health communicator whose career spans more than
20 years in journalism, public relations and community health education.
After earning a master’s degree in public health education
at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Cook combined
the disciplines of communication and public health through public
affairs, social marketing and media advocacy.
Her clients
have included the National Cancer Institute, the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, the National Diabetes Education Program,
the U.S. Office on Women’s Health, the National Eye Institute,
the States of Maryland, Delaware, Georgia, and Montana as well as
local health agencies and non-profit organizations.
As the
associate director of public affairs for Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions,
she served as a science writer and media relations specialist. Her
duties included strategic communications, marketing, media relations,
spokesperson training, research, materials development and special
events. She interviewed renowned scientists and translated scientific
research into lay language and assisted TV camera crews while protecting
patient confidentiality and promoting the Hopkins mission.
Cook started her career at Science 86 and then took
her journalistic skills to the Far East where she freelanced for
the South China Morning Post, The Washington Post, Health, Psychology
Today, Time-Life Books, and other publications.
In addition, Cook has presented the results of her work at scientific
conferences and has been a guest lecturer in graduate school courses
in public health advocacy.
